Volkswagen adds 200 jobs at Tennessee Passat plant
American car leasing customers love the Volkswagen Passat - the large sedan accounted for nearly one-quarter of VW’s 27,209 U.S. auto sales in January.
To ensure that vehicle lease dealers have enough cars on their lots to meet that vigorous demand, VW announced this week that it would add 200 new jobs to the 2,500 employees now making the car at the company’s Chattanooga, Tennessee, manufacturing facility.
The new workers will help increase the plant's Passat production capacity from 31 to 35 cars per hour. By pressing for greater manufacturing might, Volkswagen is chasing a goal of increasing its annual U.S. auto sales from 324,402 units sold in 2011 to 800,000 by 2018.
VW pitches the $19,995 Passat as a mid-size sedan that offers all the space and comfort of competing full-size models, from rear-seat legroom to a spacious trunk.
Shoppers can choose between engines including a 2.0-liter four-cylinder Clean Diesel, a gas-burning 2.5-liter five-cylinder or a 3.6-liter six-cylinder. The diesel option offers one of the car's best selling points, with 43 miles per gallon highway fuel economy and a full-tank range of nearly 800 miles.
