Honda adds 6-speed transmission to 2012 Acura TL
Honda unveiled its 2012 Acura TL this week, showing off a redesigned body and a sporty new transmission for the brand’s best-selling model.
The visual changes include remodeled bumpers, head- and tail-lights, as well as refinements to the license plate and trunk shapes. These updates could help attract attention from shoppers looking for
lease specials on new luxury sports cars, though the new powertrain will have a far greater impact on the car’s driving performance.
Acura designers chose a 6-speed automatic transmission for the car, adding an extra gear compared to past models and helping to improve its road handling and fuel economy.
To improve acceleration, drivers can use the new transmission to execute a double downshift with the 3.5-liter V-6 engine. Drivers who seek race-track tuning when they sign a
vehicle lease can use the system's "double-kick-down" feature to jump from fifth to third gear.
The 2012 TL has also improved its fuel efficiency by 3 miles per gallon over last year's model, cruising at an estimated 20 mpg in the city and 29 on highways.
"The 2012 Acura TL is refined, yet aggressive," Acura sales vice president Jeff Conrad said in a release. "Already known for its great performance, the enhanced TL has a sophisticated new look and an all-new 6-speed automatic transmission that will take performance to the next level."
