Ford extends efficient EcoBoost engine design to 11 different vehicles
Shoppers traveling to car leasing showrooms often pass by gas stations advertising steep fuel prices, approaching $4 per gallon in many parts of the country. Automakers know that expensive gasoline tempts drivers to buy small cars, so many of the new models arriving on vehicle lease lots in 2012 have lightweight parts, sleek aerodynamics and efficient engines of many sizes.
Ford is following that trend with cars like its Escape compact utility vehicle and Fusion sedan, both equipped with the fuel-efficient, 1.6-liter EcoBoost engine. Thanks to gasoline direct injection and turbocharging technologies, the motor cruises with 20 percent better fuel economy than conventional engines.
Adding the engine to 11 different models in the new year, Ford will triple its production capacity for building the fuel-saving engine design, the company said this week. In addition to the hybrid, plug-in hybrid and fully electric vehicles entering its catalog in 2012, Ford says it will soon sell nine vehicle models capable of driving at 40 miles per gallon.
Other autos offering EcoBoost engines include the full-size Taurus sedan, Focus ST sport compact and F-150 pickup truck. Together they offer a range of EcoBoost-designed engine sizes, from the smallest 1.6-liter model to a 237 horsepower 2.0-liter and a 365-horsepower 3.5-liter.
