Chevrolet Sonic extends green labeling beyond the fuel tank
Vehicle lease shoppers who choose cars designed for high fuel economy can benefit from savings at the pump, greater driving range and lower emissions.
However, experts say a truly "green" car extends those sustainable values to manufacturing and recycling, as well as driving. Chevrolet announced this week that it would begin to label its vehicles with "Ecologic" stickers that attest to the environmental impact of each automobile throughout its lifecycle.
Audited by an independent firm, the stickers will describe the automaker’s efforts to reduce the climate impact of its vehicle manufacturing and assembly processes, adopt alternative energy sources and increase recycling efforts after old cars are abandoned.
Sharp-eyed shoppers will spot the first stickers on the rear driver-side window of each 2012 Chevrolet Sonic subcompact on car leasing lots beginning in March, and on 2013 Chevrolet vehicles later in the year.
"Customers want companies to be honest and transparent about their environmental efforts and sustainability goals, and rightly so," said Mark Reuss, president of General Motors North America. "Putting an Ecologic label on each Chevrolet is just one more way for us to share our environmental progress."
